Proud of our heritage
March 17, 2014 - Craig Howell
This past weekend's Festival of Nations in Weirton drew a massive crowd to the Millsop Community Center, with probably a few hundred coming in and out of the facility throughout the day to try out some food, watch a few performances and, hopefully, learn a little bit about the cultures that have been a part of our local history.
This event has been taking place in Weirton for the last six years thanks to the efforts of volunteers with the Weirton Area Museum and Cultural Center. Dance groups and other entertainers come from throughout the Ohio Valley and up into Pittsburgh to provide a day of culture that often is lacking in our daily lives.
We all have a cultural heritage of which to be proud, and many of these groups have contributed in some way to the history of our local communities. Whether you are descended from the American Indians who originally settled the valley, Irish, Scottish or German farmers who came here before we were our own nation, let alone before West Virginia was a state, or the Italians, Greeks, Polish or many others who came here searching for work with the establishment of Weirton Steel in 1909, we all have our own pride in our ancestors and it should be celebrated.
Our towns and cities were shaped by the various cultures and traditions, and we will continue to see the effects of our own little melting pot for years to come as new cultures are introduced.
I am sure, with the continuing support of our residents, the Festival of Nations will be strong for many years to come as we all take some time to learn more about the backgrounds of the people of our region.
