Administrative pay index reviewed

NEW CUMBERLAND — The Hancock County Board of Education passed a motion Monday to instruct Superintendent Suzan Smith to review options to modify a pay index that increases raises for administrative personnel only.
“This has been a controversial issue for quite some time,” said Board President Jerry Durante.
Durante added that he has researched the pay index to see if anything could be done to equalize the pay scales in the county. He said when the state passes a raise, all school employees are typically given the same raise. The administrative pay inde

I went to Oglebay Park this past weekend for the West Virginia Press Association's annual convention and, if you haven't been to the park lately you should go, because the flowers and scenery are just lovely. One afternoon, while many of the other attendees were golfing, my mom and I strolled through the magnificent, color-drenched flower gardens. My senses were so overwhelmed by the beauty that I just had to sit down on a bench by the fountain and take it all in. If I hadn't have sat down I think I might have fallen down from the scenery. There's something about flowers (to me), and I love to be surrounded by them. God's artistry explodes through the vibrant splashes of purple, scarlet, pink, and yellow. I'm not really one to "garden," as in around the home, and I'm not fond of lawn care in the least, but visiting lavish flower gardens is a deliriously wonderful experience. I wish I had taken a photo; I did not, so I guess you will just have to go

Chill Out Drivers, Pt. 2

Yes, the poor driving continues, mostly in the area between the Veterans Memorial Bridge and the south end of state Route 213. Just seems to bring out the worst in folks, having that extra lane to drive in. So, Mr. Mitsubishi, cool move, yielding onto Route 7 south from the right lane, swinging across two lanes to pass me, then swinging back across both lanes to go into the right lane on the Pittsburgh ramp to the bridge. And the Japanese apparently don't put signals in their luxury sedans? And you, too, Subaru. I love how you cut across the lanes at warp speed, an inch off my back bumper, signal-less. Never, ever, dear Ohio Valley folk, decry the "bad drivers from Pittsburgh." We drive like people who never saw a freeway before!

The Hills, Football, and Olympic Tragedy

Can you smell it? Can you feel it? Can you live it? It is the greatest time of the year again!!! Football season, All the Good TV shows are starting the new seasons, and hot dogs and burgers are out the window to stews, brews, and football shoes. Hard hits on the field and hits on the TV set. Monday Night Football is always a good bet. Gimme some chicken and suds and you can have a night with all your buds. 8 is prime time TV and that works for me. Heroes is coming back... If you have not seen the show, it is a must see. Super human powers and great special effects will draw me in every time. The Lady of the house likes The Hills on MTV... It is on tonight and she has all her girlfriends stopping over to watch it so it looks like I'm going to be doing all cooking and serving tonight.. Which is fine because she does a lot around the house and I want her to enjoy her friends and her favorite show of all time.... I may even watch

In the mountains

I apologize for my absence. Vacations are a wonderful things. Yes, they tend to be too short. But, we must not dwell on the negatives of getting away. The positives are much more fun to talk about. I spent a week as a sponsor at The Wilds, a Christian camp for kids from grades 4-12, in Rosman, North Carolina. Our church, Colonial Baptist (yes, the burned one) sent 17 youths along with our youth paster, Scott Abercrombie, and Nicole Kendall, another sponsor, for the 11 (ish) hour drive each way. What a brilliant week. Kids met other kids from different states and different backgrounds. Kids met other kids with different slang and different accents. Kids got to be kids. They were on teams -- The Red Tape Party (red), the Blue Moose Party (white) and The Lame Duck Party (blue). They competed. They sweat. They won. They lost. And, yes, the most important thing, they were preached to, mostly by two

Oh, you can bet The Dark Knight rocked! Unless you have been living under a rock, inside of a cave and under the ocean, you've already heard the "mainstream" reviews of the latest Batman film "The Dark Knight". Now...here...exclusively,..you will get my unbiased review of this amazing movie. In case you didn't catch on, it was fantastic. While expanding the universe established by Batman Begins, this new movie did what few sequals have managed to do and kept the tone and feel of the original. The settings were familiar, the mood was constrant and we really got the chance to feel the desperation of Gotham City and its inhabitants. » Read Full Blog

Stop breaking my six-year-old son's heart. Quite frankly, I was worried this might happen. You've rooked his dad into believing y'all might be good sometime this century. I was worried that being a Pirates fan might transfer from father to son, like some infectious, uncurable disease. Every spring, I hear: "They've got a young team this year. They just need experience." Every. Single. Damn. Spring. Because anybody you've got with any experience or leadership skills, you trade away because they're too expensive. Apparently, Pirates, leadership ability and experience are not worthwhile qualities to you. I hope that, someday, not sucking will become worthwhile to you. Today is probably not that day. I'M BACK AND HERE TO STAY! And I hope that the few fans that were reading my blog before my "break" will remain as faithful to me as I am to the Pittsburgh Pirates! I began my brief, silent protest from blogging after reading an "Inside the NL" brief from the sports pages of the Monday, June 9, 2008 issue of the USA Today newspaper released shortly after the MLB draft. According to the brief (Affirmation - I'm getting so much better at this!) titled 'Pirates' quandry,' "The Pittsburgh Pirates might wait until close to the Aug. 15 deadline for signing drafted players before deciding whether to sign and how much to offer injured second-round choice Tanner Scheppers."
