Weirton council approves $13.58 million budget
Weirton City Council approved the city’s 2010-2011 fiscal budget at $13.58 million, calling for cuts in spending by more than $700,000 in the coming year. After several workshops to discuss how to balance the budget and reduce expenses, city council reduced budget numbers from the $14.3 million for the current fiscal year, ending June 30, by approximately $723,000. The budget does not call for any layoffs; however, it does not provide any pay raises for city workers. Approximately 13 positions throughout the city were left unfilled or terminated in order to cut expenses on the current fiscal budget. While officials managed to cut variable expenses, fixed costs continue to go up. In January, the state’s Consolidated Public Retirement Board voted to increase employer contributions from 11 percent to 17 percent.
