WVU names Magrath interim president after scandal
MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (AP) — Veteran educator C. Peter Magrath, the former president of three universities and a national higher education group, was named interim president of West Virginia University on Tuesday.
Magrath will succeed President Mike Garrison, who is stepping down Sept. 1 over a master’s degree scandal involving the governor’s daughter. Magrath, 75, will play a key role in helping the university rebuild its damaged national reputation and choose a permanent successor.
‘‘This is not a ship that’s even remotely sinking,’’ Magrath told reporters later in the day. ‘‘It has a good reputation, and it can be better.’’
Magrath has the academic credentials to satisfy critics who had decried Garrison’s appointment last year as political cronyism. Garrison, a 39-year-old lawyer, was chief of staff to former Democratic Gov. Bob Wise.
