MARTINSBURG, W.Va. (AP) — The Berkeley County Sheriff's Department is conducting a criminal investigation of firearms missing from its evidence room.
Sgt. B. F. Hall tells The Journal (http://bit.ly/1eALI0M ) that investigators believe the guns were taken within the last two years.
Hall says the deputy who was in charge of the evidence room at the time has since resigned. He declined to identify the deputy or say how and when the guns were discovered missing.
No charges have been filed.
Hall says none of the missing guns are from any current cases. Several were slated to be disposed of, either by being sold or destroyed.
The federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives is assisting with the investigation.
