Library offers online learning

You can practice taking tests from home or at the library for your ACT or SAT or to become a firefighter or Realtor, with immediate scoring results.

The Public Library of Steubenville and Jefferson County offers Learning Express Library, a comprehensive, interactive, online learning platform of practice tests and tutorial course series. It is designed to help students and adults succeed on academic or licensing tests they must pass.

“This is a wonderful tool at no cost for people to practice taking tests,” said Jennifer Cesta, public relations coordinator.

More than a hundred test preparation materials are available in categories including Ohio Civil Service, EMS, business and writing skills, U.S. citizenship and elementary-through-high school skills improvement.

Learning Express Library is available on the library/s Web site at www.steubenvillelibrary.org. It is located in the OPLIN, Ohio Public Library Information Network, One Search database.



Polsinelli picked for Annapolis seminar

Brian Polsinelli, an Indian Creek High School junior, has been selected to participate in the U.S. Naval Academy Summer Seminar at Annapolis, Md. Brian is the son of John and Shelly Polsinelli of Wintersville.

Only 750 students are selected for each session.

The May 8 meeting of the Ohio Valley Multiple Sclerosis support group has been canceled. The next meeting will be June 12.



Serve Others has April luncheon

Serve Others Circle of King’s Daughters and Sons held its April luncheon meeting at the YWCA with Erdella Hannen presiding.

Donna Grimm gave the blessing and Marian Renda presented devotions with the topic, “A Special Time with God.”

Hannen read from “The Silver Cross,” “The Universal Love of God for All Peoples” by Lawrence Boadt. Ruth Ann McLaughlin and Lucille Smith gave reports. The Hannens, Donna Grimm, and JoAnn Birney reported on the Spring Conference in Bucyrus, which they attended.

Linda Cooper read an article about aprons.

The circle voted to contribute $100 to the literacy program.

Erdella reminded members to bring their “Blessing Jars” to the May 20 meeting. Cooper will be hostess and Katie Gardei will present the program.

McLaughlin presented an Easter program, “You Are,” with CD music following each story she read about Easter.

Joseph DAR state session page

Lauren Joseph, granddaughter of Nancy Valles, a member of the Fort Steuben Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, represented the chapter as a page at the Ohio DAR state conference in Columbus.

Lauren is a student at Linsly School and a member of the Wheeling Chapter of Children of the American Revolution.



EMS plans Memorial Day car show

Cadiz Emergency Medical Services will hold its third-annual Memorial Day car show May 26 at Scott United Methodist Church, 817 E. Market St., Cadiz, with registration from noon to 3 p.m. and the show from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. Cost is $5. Call (740) 942-2082 for information. There will be door prizes, a food stand, drawing, free blood pressure checks, dash plaques to first 100 show cars, top 30 and best of show awards and music by Spikeman.



SHS class to hold 60th-year reunion

The Steubenville High School Class of 1948 is planning its 60th anniversary reunion, which will be celebrated July 19 and 20.

A dinner and social will be held July 19 at Steubenville Country Club and a brunch is planned July 20 in the commons area at the new Harding Middle School.

Invitations and registration forms have been mailed to more than 50 class members, but information is needed on many others, according to Marge Bedortha, reunion chairman. Bedortha can be contacted at (740) 264-2779, with information on class members not contacted.

Other committee members are Donald Billham, Mary Virginia Irwin, Joanne Mahlie, Joe Mickey, Ron Nixon, Juanita Slappy, Rita Wickham and Jack and Martha Wilson.



Training class planned by center

The Upper Ohio Valley Sexual Assault Help Center will hold a 30-hour training class for new volunteer advocates. Duties incllude covering the 24-hour victim hotline and providing victim support in medical, legal and court settings. Volunteers should be older than 18, have access to a car and a phone and 12 hours a month to contribute. Call (304) 234-1783 for an application and information.



Brilliant Lions to sell brooms, bulbs

The Brilliant Lion’s Club will hold its annual doorpto-door broom and light bulb sale Tuesday and Wednesday from 6 p.m. to dusk.



Patty Wetherell made doggie treats

Patty Wetherell of New Alexandria is the one who baked the doggie treats on the March 30 Flavor Page was called Patty Wheeler under the picture of Freddie and the doggie goodies. Sorry for the inconvenience.
