Fort Steuben DAR closes club season

The Fort Steuben Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution held its closing luncheon for the season at the Holiday Inn of Steubenville.

Regent Pamela Lilly presided.

The Good Citizenship Essay winners were Megan Pierce, first place; Morgan Finton, second place; and Jamie Lynn Warnock and Caitlin Kocher, third place. The award was presented by Chairman Linda Hohenshil.

The American History awards went to Marissa Carducci, first place; Abagale Maxwell, second place; and Lauren McIntosh, third place and were presented by Chairman Cheryl Kelly.

The Minor-Francis and the Golda Fulton Fulton $500 Scholarships were awarded to Cody Ching of Steubenville High School and Carly Crago of Oak Glen High School. The scholarships were presented by Chairman Diane Bowers.

National winners in the Junior American Citizens Contest were:

Banner Weirton Christian Center pre-school, first; grade seven, Anthony Craig, John Linn and Patrick Pizzofferato, first; grade eight, Lauren Karas, Andalyn Dugan and Maci Metterberger, third.

Stamp Grade six, Justin Corsi, first; and grade seven, Mallory Giannamore, third.

Photographic Essay Grade six, Katie Ching, second.

Teachers involved in the projects were Kelle Kraus, Weirton Christian Center Pre-school; Cheryl Kelley, Millsop Elementary School, grade two; Dennis McGrath, grade six; Don Reeves, grade seven and Lloyd Wells, grade eight, Harding Middle School.

Art/Poster Josh Kittle, Travis Bell and Marissa McAllister; Banner Sarah Mamula, Dominic DiCarlo and Tanner Westlake; Stamp Julia Donell and Mercedes Lancia.

Story Jacob Huntzinger, Alyssa McIntire, Morgan Rauch and Morgan Olmstead.

Visual Arts/Photographic Essay Charlie Keenan and Julie Paprocki.

Joanne Morrison was installed as first vice regent and Diane Bowers as librarian. Carol Skerbitz conducted the installation. Nancy Valles reported on the history of DAR schools, Tamassi and Crossmore. The chapter can support them by saving Campbell Soup labels and General Mills box tops.

A memorial service was conducted by Karen Blanc, chaplain, and Lilly in remembrance of chapter members who died in 2008. They are Janis Trikones, Dorothy Henry, Elizabeth Richey and Wanda Weiler.

Lilly announced that the 2117th Continental Congress was held June 24 through 29 in Washington, D.C.

The next meeting will be a tea set for Sept. 13 at Historic Fort Steuben.
