Housing unit marks opening

July 12, 2008
By GIOVANNI P. ROSSI, Staff writer

An open house and ribbon-cutting ceremony were held for a recently completed Section 8 housing unit Friday.

George Vargo, executive director of the Weirton Housing Authority, thanked members of Weirton City Council and the Holliday's Cove Corp. Board of Commissioners for attending the event. At approximately 960 square feet, Vargo noted the unit at 905 Anderson St. was the third completed in Weirton.

"This is a good unit," said HCC Chairman Wesley Anderson. "It is something for the community and the city to be proud of."

According to Vargo, a qualifying family will be moved into the unit as of Aug. 1. He added that this family is from a Section 8 waiting list of more than 200 and is very excited to have a completed unit.

Funds for the construction of the unit came from the HCC's annual contribution toward a Community House Development Organization.

"The consortium provided a grant in the amount of $82,824 to the HCC for the development of a single-family unit," Vargo said. "This was from fiscal year 2007."

Ward 3 Councilman Fred Marsh spoke at the event in Mayor Mark Harris' place. On behalf of himself, Harris and Weirton City Council, Marsh thanked the agencies gathered for their contributions to housing in Weirton.

"As you know, housing is an issue this council has put a large focus on," he said. "What you've done here has done some good in improving what we as a city have to offer."
