World Community Day service set

Church Women United are sponsoring the annual celebration of World Community Day with a service at 11 a.m. on Friday at the Weirton Heights Memorial Baptist Church located at 1221 Ivy St.

Lunch will be served following the service.

The Rev. William Stout is the coordinator and Church Women United delegates will participate in the service.

Center offers workshop in holiday design

The Wheeling Civic Garden Center, Oglebay Park, will present a workshop entitled, "Christmas Designs in Perfect Harmony," at 10:30 a.m. on Nov. 13.

Participants will be creating arrangements silk wreaths, swags and garlands to awaken the holiday spirit using a wide variety of silk flowers and artificial greens. Cost will vary according to materials selected. There is an additional $3 charge for non-members of the center.

Sportsman's Club turkey shoot planned

The Colliers Sportsman's Club is hosting a turkey shoot on Sunday, Nov. 16 at the club beginning at 2 p.m. The event is open to the public with 12-gauge, 16-gauge, and 20-gauge shotguns only.

Second report luncheon announced

The second United Way Report Luncheon for the 2008 Campaign will be held at noon on Friday at the Serbian American Cultural Center. The luncheon is open to the public and cost $6.

Captains Ed & Goldie Long, the new Commanding Officers of The Salvation Army, a United Way member agency, are the guest speakers.

Pleasant Valley Methodist Women meet

The monthly meeting of the Pleasant Valley United Methodist Women met in the Church Fellowship Hall on Oct. 27. Dee Campbell, president, opened the meeting with women reciting the Pledge of Allegiance.

Lynn Lynch was in charge of the program on missions. She explained the UMW's missions and purposes in the United States and around the world. The group helps women, children, youth and shut-ins wherever there is a need. Ten cents a week, $5.20 per person, was collected from members as part of the informative mission program. This year it will be given to the Weirton Christian Center for food.

The women also made a donation to UNICEF.

The annual Christmas dinner will be held on Dec. 1 at Undo's. Those who wish to attend can contact any member of UMW.

Sylvia Resnik was hostess for the evening. The meeting was adjourned with the closing prayer being recited by all.

Coffeehouse at 'The Arbor' continues

The coffeehouse at "The Arbor" in New Cumberland continues the season from 7 to 10 p.m. on Friday. This is a community outreach program of the New Cumberland Free Methodist Church.

The Arbor offers live music and a game room. Sandwiches and snacks are available for purchase from the kitchen. The coffeehouse is open on the first and third Fridays of each month through the spring. This week music will be provided by "The Varmints," with bluegrass and bluegrass gospel.

There is no cover charge, but tips are accepted for the musicians. Children are welcome with accompanying adults.

The Arbor is located at 208 South Chester St, just one block south of the traffic light. For information or directions, contact the church at (304) 564-4411, or Debbie at (304) 794-8275.

Adopt a dog at the Ft. Steuben Mall

The Jefferson County Humane Society will be sponsoring a dog adoption at the Ft. Steuben Mall from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday. The adoption area will be located in the concourse nearest J.C. Penney.

Puppies and young dogs as well as more mature dogs will be available for adoption. All of the animals have been rescued from the Jefferson County Animal Shelter and are in desperate need of homes.

If you have room in your home and heart for a forever friend, come out on Saturday. For information about the types of dogs available, contact Debbie at the Jefferson County Humane Society at (740) 266-6476.

Golden Seniors offer trip options

Weirton Golden Seniors are planning two motorcoach trips for the spring of 2009.

The first is to New Orleans from March 1 to March 7. The trip includes a guided tour of the city, a tour of a Louisiana plantation, a view of the bayou on a Swamp Tour, a riverboat cruise, gaming at Harrah's Casino and more.

Cost is $569 based on double occupancy and includes ten meals and all gratuities. A deposit of $75 is required by Dec. 8. Seats are still available.

On May 11 to May 14 the group will travel to the Biltmore Estate in Ashville, N.C. to tour the estate, visit St. Lawrence Basilica, a folk art center and Harrah's Casino.

Cost is $349 based on double occupancy and includes six meals and all gratuities. A deposit of $75 is due by Jan. 5, 2009.
