AARP state president visits Three Score

Ron Retzer, entertainer, music teacher at Buckeye High School, music director at radio station WWVA, music director of "Jamboree in the Hills" and organist at a local Church performed for members of Weir Cove AARP No. 3846 at their October meeting.

Among his selections were "Boogie Woogie Choo-Choo Train," "King of the Road," "Blueberry Hill," "A Closer Walk with Thee," Ray Stevens' "The Day the Squirrel went Berserk" and "Chantilly Lace." Members applauded with a lengthy standing ovation.

Bettie Williamson, president, welcomed all to Undo's at the Weirton Holiday Inn and shared thoughts of "Nostalgia."

She introduced Ruth Wagner, West Virginia State President of AARP and her guest, Jean Ruckman, volunteer.

On her first visit to Weirton, Wagner spoke on Cornerstone, volunteers of AARP who serve their communities. She told the "Tale of the Clothes Line," which became the newspaper passed yard-to-yard.

Wagner elaborated on the motto "Divided We Fail," encouraging seniors to send concerns to legislators.

The invocation was given by Kathryn Hardsouk who read "The Cactus and the Caterpillar," followed by prayer, the Pledge of Allegiance and singing of "God Bless America" by the membership.

Dinner consisted of lasagna with sauce or chicken marsala with mushrooms, buttered noodles, corn, salad and cheesecake with cherries.

Betty Conley read the minutes which were approved.

Midge Green provided her treasurer's report which will be filed for audit.

Sunshine Chair Mary Rose Spano sent a get-well card to Edna Harrison. "Happy Birthday" greetings were sung to Al Ficca, Josie Yarosz, Olive Sweeney, Pauline Stillwagon, Billy Moss and Ed Krinock.

Carol Irvine, program chair, announced that November entertainment will feature a newcomer to the club, Italian vocalist, Coz Serrapere.

Regina Truax reported on reservations and tours: Oglebay's Festival of Lights Tour has been changed to Nov. 18; Nov. 3, The Meadows Casino and Tanger Outlets, $25; Nov. 28, WVU vs. Pitt Football Game, $65; Dec. 12, "Doo-Wop," Mellon Arena, 7 p.m. show and transportation, $60; and Jan. 8, "Jersey Boys," Benedum Theatre, 7 p.m., show and transportation, $89. Katy Rosohac announced that dues continue to be collected. She introduced four new members: Mary Orrecchio, Phyllis LeMasters, Emily Waggle and Linda Hileman.

The nominating committee presented the slate of officers to be installed in November.

Josie Yaroz was thanked for her creation and donation of a large Halloween lighted ceramic centerpiece for the raffle prize.

Drawing winners this month were: Free Dinners, Kaylene Manley and Green; Quilt, Mildred Vucovich; and Drawing, Irvine. Hardsouk presented mums or baskets of apples as door prizes to Ernie Nicholas Sr., Mary Hvizdak, Jennie Muscara, Bill Wetzel, Trent Ciarrocchi, Irvine, Doris Ficca, Loretta Nicholas, Conley, and Nancy Tournay.

The next regular meeting will be on Monday.

After the benediction by Hardsouk, the meeting was adjourned.
