Rotary raises money for 2009
By ANGELINA DICKSON, Staff writerThe Rotary Club of Weirton hosted an in-club Christmas auction to raise money for the 2009 General Fund.
The Rotary General Fund represents the operating reserve of the organization. Its primary objective is to provide for the long-term financial security of Rotary and the organizations it sponsors.
The Rotary Club raised more than $650 at last Wednesday's auction. Each Rotarian was encouraged to purchase a gift and wrap it to be placed for auction.
Club President George Kondik, along with the assistance of Dr. Subramonium Jayakumar, showcased each item and began each bid at $20 in hopes of raising some funds for the 2009 General fund.
"Our main goal is to keep our motto 'Service above self' alive in our community," said Kondik.
Among the list of items up for bid were several bottles of wine auctioned off at $40 to $60 a piece.
Rotarian Bob Gracey placed a bid for $40 on an unknown item that turned out to be a bottle of wine and wine glass gift set.
Rotarians Victor Greco, Bill Galloway, Rhonda Quattrochi and John Newbrough were among the many who also placed bids on each of the unknown items.
