Weirton Traffic Commission set to meet Wednesday

By ANGELINA DICKSON, Staff writer
POSTED: December 1, 2008

The City of Weirton Traffic Commission will meet Wednesday at the City Building to discuss making changes in several local neighborhoods.

The Traffic Commission's last meeting took place in August where several items were tabled for discussion.

One item set for discussion was the establishment of a no parking zone around the dead end area at the west end of Franklin Avenue.

The discussion has been tabled for several months because of an ongoing inquiry into the ownership of the property by Public Works Director John Brown.

"Vehicles parked at the end prevent the ability of other drivers to turn their vehicles around," stated Commissioner George Redish.

Another item tabled at a previous meeting was a request by Councilman George Ash Sr. to require residents and visitors to have a parking permit on the 3000 block of Elm Street.

New items of business set for discussion include requests by Councilman Ron Jones to dedicate a residential disability parking space to be established at 553 North 10th St.

Jones will also request that a no parking zone across from the driveway of 128 Weirview St. in front of 127 Weirview St.

Councilman David Dalrymple will be making several requests as well.

Dalrymple is set to request several residential disability parking spaces at 123 Church St. and 100 Wetzel St. He is recommending no parking zones be established at 118 South 16th St. and 118 South 14th St.

Dalrymple is also recommending an increase to the speed limit on Birch Drive for automobiles only.

"There are no homes, no schools in the area, and traffic volume on the road has decreased dramatically from its former levels," stated Dalrymple.

He will be asking that the current speed limit, 25 miles per hour, be raised to 35 miles per hour but keeping the limit 25 for truck traffic.
