Global warming a factJuly 19, 2009To the Editor, For once I wish Rob Denham would put his money where his "facts" are. He crams a lot of right wing prattle into letters, but where's his proof? On one hand, he claims that his free speech rights are being trampled yet his letters continue to appear in this paper. He calls Jon Stewart, Stephen Colbert and others "liberal pundits" - they are entertainers Rob. That's why it's called Comedy Central. On the other hand, Fox News regularly features "pundits" like Glenn Beck who appear to fabricate stories based on fantasies like his meeting with Barbara Walters rather than reporting the truth. One could only wish that free speech meant true speech. He also drags Howard Stern into the mix. Howard's speech isn't free, Rob. Even you admit he's "pay to listen. Oh, by the way, Stern's perversity was previously a feature on Clear Channel Radio whose roster also contains Glenn Beck, Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity, Michael Savage... I don't know how Rob missed the media's coverage of the NASA global warming report. Unlike many scientific studies disagreeing with the Bush Doctrine of slash and burn which were dumped or re-written, this was covered by news sources I use. However the "report" by Alan Carlin (who is an economist, not scientist, and was not part of the climate change working group) was debunked by a NASA climatologist who called it "a ragbag collection of un-peer reviewed web pages, an unhealthy dose of sunstroke, a dash of astrology and more cherries than you can poke a cocktail stick at. Denham claims that global warming is a lie and Al Gore is a liar. I invite him to check this site: www.realclimate.org/index.php/archives/2009/06/bubkes/ And stating that his "evidence" is the overwhelming numbers of anti-energy bill messages flooding (maybe that was the wrong choice of words) D.C. Really? Can we see them? We have already seen the results of global warming. Weather has become increasingly volatile with huge storms, flooding, drought, severe heat and cold plaguing the world. Britain is a microcosm of this change. Looking at just the past few months, it's had record heat, snow and massive rain storms. With the melting of the polar ice caps there's been a weakening of the North Atlantic Current which brings warm waters to western Europe. If this goes, the climatic damage will be immense. So what life changing effects is Denham worried about? Having to trade an SUV for a smaller car or riding a bus? "Meatless Mondays" or using efficient light fixtures? Recycling? If it means our children and grandchildren would still have a viable environment in which to live, I can't believe anyone would pitch the fit conservatives are. Does Denham care about the rest of us? I think not. he's content to use what he wants, when he wants and in the end if it means that future generations are out of luck - and everything else, well, hes not going to be around to take the blame.
