David Duffy Barto

BARTO, David Duffy, 87, of Slovan, Pa., died Friday, July 24, 2009, at The Donnell House, Washington, Pa.

He was born June 11, 1922, in Slovan, a son of the late Paul and Lukaria Federoff Barto.

A 1940 graduate of Union High School, David was a member of Our Lady of Lourdes Roman Catholic Church. He was retired as a machinist for the machine shop of National Steel, Weirton division. He was a U.S. Army veteran who served during World War II, and earned the Purple Heart, Bronze Star and Oak Leaf Cluster medals. He was a member of the Burgettstown Area Senior Center, and a lifetime member of the VFW Post 6553 Barto Post and the Burgettstown Knights of Columbus, third degree.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by four brothers, John, Fred, Sergie and Steve Barto; three sisters, Nellie Panameroff, Pauline Guiddy and Repa Fuller; and a grandson, Barry Clark Barto.

He is survived by his wife, Alyce Lovin Barto, whom he married June 30, 1951; two sons, David (Deborah) Barto of Paris, Pa., and Michael (Rosanne) Barto of Severna Park, Md.; a daughter, Debra (John) Sheridan of Orland Park, Ill.; two sisters, Anne Kempa of Pittsburgh, Pa., and Vera Bumbera of Fla.; five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Friends received Sunday from 1-4 and 6-9 p.m. at Steel and Wolfe Funeral Home Inc., 3721 Main St., Weirton. Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 1 p.m. Monday, July 27, 2009, at Our Lady of Lourdes Church, Burgettstown, with Father Bob Staszewski officiating. Burial at Our Lady of Lourdes Cemetery, Burgettstown. Military funeral service by Barto VFW Post 6553 Honor Guard.
