STEUBENVILLE — Planning and ticket sales for the Oct. 1 Jefferson County Chamber of Commerce annual banquet featuring retired Pittsburgh Steelers running back Jerome Bettis, continue. Tickets are being made available to chamber members through an Aug. 1 deadline, according to Sue Hershey, chamber president. After that, tickets will be made available to non-members. Any non-members who are interested in attending the dinner should contact the chamber office at (740) 282-6226 to get their name on a list for available tickets. Tickets will be made available to non-members in the order their name was placed on the list, she said. “The focus of the dinner is the presentation of the 2009 Chamber Excellence Awards,” Hershey said. Nominations for company of the year, new business of the year (three years in business or less), chamber person of the year and lifetime achievement (open to chamber members and non-members alike) being accepted by the chamber through Aug. 1. Hershey said the excitement level in the community will rise with the announcement of “The Bus Stops Here” on the chamber’s community billboard at the Brady Avenue interchange on Sunset Boulevard soon. The evening will open with a cocktail party on the plaza outside the Father Matthew Finnegan Fieldhouse on the campus of the Franciscan University of Steubenville at 6 p.m., followed by dinner in the fieldhouse at 7 p.m., the presentation of the awards at 8 p.m. followed by a talk from Bettis. “The focus is to give the special people in our community recognition, and who better than Jerome Bettis to give them a handshake and a pat on the back for a job well done, from someone who has done such a distinguished job in his career on and off the field,” Hershey said. Hershey gave commendations to the university for accommodating the annual banquet in its busy fall schedule. “I can’t say enough about how much the university has accommodated our every request,” she said. “They have a function of their own the following day, so they’ll be putting in a long night of setting up for their event. They’ve gone out of their way to accommodate us for the evening.” Hershey anticipates the evening to be a perfect chance to showcase the community, the university and to honor local businesses as well as attracting visitors through Bettis’ appearance. The Wal-Mart Distribution Center 7017 on state Route 43 north of Wintersville is providing sponsorship for the Bettis appearance. The dinner will feature the chamber’s annual awards as well as the drawing for the Green Machine, a Wildfire Motors electric car that was donated by Wildfire owners Don and Lora Snyder with proceeds to be split between the chamber and the Progress Alliance economic development organization. The vehicle is making appearances at various community events and tickets are sold at its appearances or by contacting the chamber or Progress Alliance.
