Elks announce game, picnic, golf

The Weirton Elks Lodge 1801 will hold its first bingo game starting at 7 p.m. on Friday. The game is open to all Elks members and their guests.

Prizes will be awarded throughout the evening.

The lodge will hold its annual picnic from 2 to 7 p.m. on Saturday at Marland Heights Park for members, guests and their families. Cost is $5 for those age 15 and older.

Elks volunteers are needed for the following activities: registration table, grill and buffet, bake sale, silent auction and children's games. A cornhole tournament is also on the agenda.

Volunteers are also needed to assist in loading the truck on Saturday morning to transport items to the picnic site, for clean up following the picnic and the transport items back to the lodge.

Sign-up sheets are available at the lodge.

On Aug. 23 the combined Elks/Marl Inn Golf Tournament will be held at Mountaineer's Woodview Golf Course. Tournament entry is $60 per person. Contact the lodge for information at (304)?748-0565.

Thursday Wing Night continues during the summer with seven flavors of wings for members and guests.

Weekly 'Chicken Blasts' continue

The spring and summer weekly "Chicken Blasts" continue on Wednesdays at the Serbian Picnic Grounds on Kings Creek Road in Weirton. The weekly picnics are sponsored by the Men's Club of the Holy Resurrection Serbian Orthodox Church.

To order a wood-roasted chicken, call (304)?748-9866 beginning at 6 a.m. on Wednesday. This telephone number and method will be the ONLY way to reserve a chicken, as no other reservations will be accepted. Each chicken costs $6.

Railroad history program set for Saturday

A program on one of the areas' prominent railroads will be given at the meeting of the Fort Vance Historical Society at 1 p.m. on Saturday in the Burgettstown Library.

Ron DiOrio, president, invites all those interested in history of the railroads on routes in Pennsylvania to West Virginia to attend the open session. New members are being accepted from throughout the Tri-State Area. Business and program meetings are held on alternate months until November.

Fort Vance offered protection from Indians for settlers from a wide area in Western Pennsylvania, area now West Virginia on the route to the Ohio River.

Other officers are Ruth Plunkett, vice-president; Helen Kramer, secretary; and Mary Westlake, treasurer.

Boosters pancake breakfast set

The annual Weir High Soccer Boosters' Pancake Breakfast will be held on from 7 to 10 a.m. on Aug. 8 at Applebees Restaurant in Steubenville.

You can purchase a ticket from any Weir High soccer player or call Mary Hannah Finton at (304) 723-3032. Walk-ins are also welcome.

St. Thomas peach festival Aug. 8

St. Thomas Episcopal Church, Three Springs Drive, Weirton, will hold its 46th-annual Peach Festival featuring its giant peach shortcake Aug. 8 from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Other food sold will be roast beef, sausage and meatball sandwiches, cabbage rolls, haluski, french fries and beverages.

There will be white elephant, used books and bake sales and a "Tisket-a-Tasket" booth where theme baskets will be presented to drawing winners. Door prizes also will be awarded every hour.

Brooke High class reunion Saturday

Brooke High School Class of 1999 will hold its 10-year reunion Saturday from 2 p.m. to 10 p.m. at Brooke Hills Park, Wellsburg's Black Bear Shelter.

Tickets can be purchased the day of the reunion at the door, but an additional fee will be added.

Wellness Center to host picnic

"Throw another burger on the grill." The Hancock County Senior Wellness Center is hosting its annual picnic beginning at 11:30 a.m. on Aug. 18.

The day of activities is one of the highlights on the Wellness Center's Calendar. Connie's Catering of Chester is providing a buffet of picnic treats.

The annual event includes all the traditional picnic favorites: bingo, door prizes, entertainment, billiards, cards and food. Transportation is available.

Don't wait to make your reservation. Cost for the day is $7 per person. Call (304) 564-3801 no later than Monday, Aug. 10 to reserve your spot.

Bucey steps-up yoga class

ACE-certified fitness instructor Rob Bucey has added strength and tone to his yoga class at the Fort Steuben Mall. Each class offers a combination of yoga, pilates, and strength training with 3-pound and 5-pound weights.

Classes are held at 9 a.m. and 7 p.m. on Mondays and Wednesdays, and at 9 a.m. on Fridays.

Cost is $5. Bring a mat or towel to sit on.
