The Weirton Area Park Board is taking a look at and highlighting some of the programs available at the Weirton Millsop Community Center.
Program Director Kevin Elias recently informed members of the Park Board that sign-ups and participation are around the same as last year and there may be a few new programs to come in future.
Elias said one of the newest programs, introduced in 2008, is Friday Night Mayhem. He said it is an offshoot of the Outrageous Overnighter but geared toward younger participants in second through sixth grade.
"The activities are similar to the overnight events, but participants are at the center until about 11:30 p.m. and can still get home for a good night's rest," stated Elias.
He added the event also appeals to parents who drop off their children for a safe night of fun while enjoying an evening to themselves or even stay to participate in the activities with their children.
Elias said the Outrageous Overnighters include spending a night locked in the building with friends with an assortment of activities, fun and games for middle schoolers. He said this bi-monthly recreation series includes everything from movies and swim races to music, dance, dodgeball and more.
Yearly program events have included the Bulletin Board Benefit Auction set to take place in December. Elias said the annual event provides a unique way for people to buy gifts for Christmas. He said buyers can go into the center and look over the items, place bids and attempt to win what they want.
Other upcoming programs offered by the Weirton Millsop Community Center include Indoor Youth Soccer, Weirton Termite Basketball, Seriously Fun Swimming, Club MCC, High School and Middle School Hoop Leagues, Indoor and Outdoor Flag Football and many others.
