Weirton City Council recently honored local resident Duke Horstemeyer for his service on the board of directors of the Mary H. Weir Public Library for 35 years.

Mayor Mark Harris stated it takes a special person to serve the community in which they live. He said Horstemeyer has and continues to serve on other boards throughout the city and for his 35 years on the Library Board, he deserves thanks and recognition.

"Your dedication has been unwavering and the city is grateful for your service," said Harris.

Horstemeyer stated he owes a debt of gratitude to the city for allowing him to serve. He said it is self-gratifying to help the community in various ways and he will continue to support the community.

Horstemeyer said his main concern for the future of the library is the 2010 Census. He said the city of Weirton is guaranteed to lose population and as such will lose funding for the library.

He said despite this, he is thankful for the generosity of the city of Weirton, the Brooke and Hancock County levies and the Weirton United Way for supporting the library over the years and hopes the community will continue its support.
