Citizen thanks councilman

November 22, 2009
By ANGELINA DICKSON, Staff writer

During Weirton City Council meetings, city council is known to present citizens with awards and recognize good deeds, hard work and dedication to the community, but in November one councilman received a special award from a citizen.

The Harris Hill Development Committee came together to get a plaque to recognize Ward 1 Councilman Ron Jones. Tracy Veal, president of the committee, presented the award.

Veal said it is not often that citizens receive a quick response from some officials. He said Jones responded quickly and appropriately to the needs of the area residents. He said Harris Hills is still part of the city and Jones is doing what he can to assist the area and the development committee.

"On behalf of the residents of Harris Hills, I'd like to thank Ronnie for his help and present him with a plaque of appreciation," he said.

Jones stated he was surprised at the acknowledgment and happy he could help the residents.

Mayor Mark Harris stated it is not often when citizens come forward to thank and recognize their councilman and other officials.

"It's a good thing and nice to see," said Harris.

Also during the council meeting, Jones mentioned the passing of Gary DeLong, a resident of the Weircrest area of Weirton. He said DeLong helped the area residents with many issues as well as donated money for the Weircrest sign that can be seen along County Road. He added that DeLong also acted as a "mayor" of sorts for the residents of Weircrest and he would like to have a memorial bench placed on Weircrest in his honor.
