Three Springs Drive work on agenda of tonight's meeting

February 8, 2010
By ANGELINA DICKSON, Staff writer

Weirton city officials are set to come together to determine changes taking place in the community, including the Three Springs Drive project which officials feel will appeal to pedestrians.

Council is set to meet at 7 p.m. today to discuss the issues.

The Weirton Finance Committee met on Thursday where members recommended a resolution to enter into a supplemental agreement with the West Virginia Department of Transportation, Division of Highways, to include improvements to Three Springs Drive as part of the transportation enhancement program project for Penco Road.

With approximately $138,600 left over after the completion of the Penco Road project, which addressed sidewalk enhancements and lighting, city officials plan to do the same on the west side of Three Springs Drive beginning at Amerihost Drive and extending to Potomac Avenue.

The funds must be expended by November 2010.

An old item up for discussion includes a request to re-zone the Kings Creek Golf Course Club House, formerly Pleasant Valley Country Club, from an R-1 residential area into a C-2 Commercial property.

The Planning Commission voted against recommending the request. It still must go before council for its decision, however. The Unified Development Ordinance, in reference to zoning, states that once a zone has been changed, it is permanent and if the zone changes are passed, any C-2 Commercial business can move into the area should the golf course business fail.

Other items up for discussion include:

Ordinance No. 1670 the City of Weirton Addressing Ordinance.

Resolution to enter into contract for property liability insurance coverage for the City of Weirton.

Ordinance updating and amending the building code for the City of Weirton.

Resolution to authorize the City Manager to accept a grant through the Federal Emergency Management Agency for funding to the Weirton Fire Department.

Ordinance requiring 75 percent of council members to enact rates, fees and charge adjustments for service provided by the Weirton Municipal Waterworks System.

Resolution to enter into agreement with Reimbursement Concepts to lease the Cove School lot.
