Libraries: A place for imagination

Dolly Parton Imagination Library program a real delight for area children

February 26, 2010 - By ANGELINA DICKSON, Staff writer

Local children were invited to the Mary H. Weir Public Library Thursday where a program providing children with one free book a month until their fifth birthday, the Dolly Parton Imagination Library, was launched.

The Imagination Library was started in 1996 by entertainer Dolly Parton and in the state is currently funded by the West Virginia Legislature and Gov. Joe Manchin III, according Robin Taylor, program director. She said Hancock County is the 14th county to launch the program in West Virginia, making it one of 27 counties expected to actively participate in the program by July 31.

"This program is free to all children under 5 who live within the boundaries of the county," Taylor said, noting there were 11 sign-ups in the first hour at the Mary H. Weir Public Library.

Rachel Gray, program coordinator, stated the amount of registrations varies from county to county but the program currently serves more than 8,000 children and more than 230,000 books have been distributed since June of 2007.

"Ongoing registrations are also available at the public libraries participating in the program as well as WIC offices throughout participating counties," said Taylor.

Several community and state organizations, including the Weirton Christian Center; Women Infants and Children, Healthways, Hancock County Preschool and the West Virginia State Treasurers Office, set up booths during the program to offer parents and caretakers information regarding programs for children as well.

Library Director Rik Rekowski said he was pleased with the turnout. He said activities for the children included storytime, crafts and a magician. Door prizes were also given.

"This program allows us to stress the importance of getting parents involved and encouraging children to read at a young age," said Rekowski.
