Legislative honors givenWeirton Madonna lauded for undefeated seasonMarch 16, 2010 - By ANGELINA DICKSON, Staff writerWest Virginia legislators honored the Weirton Madonna High School football team members, coaches and principal for winning the West Virginia Football Championship in the Class A division and completing the season undefeated. Kristen Bowman Cross, daughter of state Sen. Ed Bowman, D-Weirton, recently was sent to the high school as an ambassador for the local members of the state Legislature. She said because the legislative session was still going on, she was asked to present the certificates of recognition and honor to the team members. The Weirton Madonna football team achieved a goal that had not been reached since 1986 by having an undefeated, championship-winning season. "For bringing honor and distinction to the state of West Virginia, you deserve the recognition," she said. Blue Dons coach Bob Kramer, who garnered his 102nd win at the school, stated the members of the team were just that, a team. He said it took a lot of hard work and dedication on the students' behalf and they pulled together for a great season. "I'm proud of the performance we gave," said Kramer. Principal John Mihalyo stated he was also "very proud" of the team. He said the performance put forth paid out big and said the school is honored by the recognition.
