Transit discounts = good responseOffers in celebration fo 20th anniversary to continue through SeptemberJuly 26, 2010 - By CRAIG HOWELL, Managing editorWEIRTON - Weirton Transit officials feel they have been getting a good response to the discounts being offered as part of its 20th anniversary celebration. As part of the observance, monthly passes sold through September will be given a 20 percent discount. In addition, day-ride tickets for Weirton Transit's regular route will be sold at half price on the 20th day of the month through September. Interim Transit Manager Kevin Beynon explained the first discount day was held last week, and seemed to go well. "The people that did ride seemed to appreciate it," he said. He said, however, that even with the discounted prices, there wasn't an increase in the number of monthly passes sold for July. "We still sold 21 passes," Beynon said, adding there were 130 people who rode the bus on July 20. Currently, day passes are $2 per person, with the charge being $1 on those selected discount days. A regular monthly bus pass is normally $32. Weirton Transit Corp. started June 1, 1990, following a period of 10 years in which there was no public transit service in the city. It currently operates a main route as well as a demand-response service. Currently, Weirton Transit services routes only in the city of Weirton. Officials have been in discussion with other area communities for the possibility of expanding services into parts of Hancock and Brooke counties.
