SMITHFIELD - A family was staying with friends Friday night after a fire destroyed their North Street home near the center of the Jefferson County community.
Smithfield Fire Chief Nathan Ford said firefighters from Smithfield and Dillonvale responded to the blaze at approximately 4:30 p.m.
"The house was occupied but the family wasn't home at the time of the fire. We aren't sure what started the fire and it remains under investigation," he declared.
"Half of the house was pretty much damaged from the fire and the rest of the home suffered smoke damage," said Ford.
"We called the Red Cross in order to seek assistance for the family who lost almost everything in the fire," Ford added.
Ford said firefighters spent approximately three hours on the scene.
There were no injuries, Ford said.
