STEUBENVILLE, Ohio (AP) — A former Ohio high school football player has returned to the field for the first time since serving time in a juvenile detention center for raping a 16-year-old girl two years ago.

WTOV-TV ( reports Ma'Lik Richmond played for Steubenville (STOO'-behn-vihl) High School in a scrimmage Tuesday.

Richmond received a one-year sentence in March 2013 for raping the West Virginia girl following an alcohol-fueled party. He's almost must register as a sex offender every six months for the next 20 years.

Steubenville football coach Reno Saccoccia (SAK'-awch) says Richmond did everything the judicial system asked of him and deserves a second chance.

An Ohio High School Athletic Association spokesman says it's up to the school to determine whether a student athlete participates. District officials did not immediately return phone messages from The Associated Press.
