Indian Creek announces top students for 2011

WINTERSVILLE - Indian Creek High School has announced its top 10 seniors in the Class of 2011.

Graduation will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Franciscan University of Steubenville.

Dhatri Kotekal is class valedictorian, and Jordan Spence is salutatorian. The remaining top 10 include Alicia Greco, Ashten Gibson, Ashley Ruttencutter, Taylor Fithen, Amber Lash, Sarah Millick, Megan Beebe and Emily Mathieu.

Kotekal is the daughter of Jaya and Nagaraj Kotekal of Wintersville. She was a member of Key Club, Students Against Destructive Decisions and the Envirothon team. She served in numerous leadership positions being president of National Honor Society, president of the Youth Advisory Committee of Jefferson County and co-captain of the Indian Creek Academic Team. She was in the marching and concert bands, serving as squad leader and first chair clarinet for two years.

Kotekal has received the Gold Key for maintaining a high grade-point average and three academic letters for community service. She has been named AP scholar for high scores on advanced placement tests and named to Who's Who Among American Scholars. Her musical awards include superior and excellent ratings on clarinet solos and ensembles and the Arion band award for scholastic and musical achievement.

She has received the State Department of Education Award of Merit, the president's award of excellence and the Kristen Robinson Johnson Scholarship. She has been selected into the honors program at Ohio State University and received the Provost Scholarship from the university. She plans to major in pre-medicine and holds a 4.654 grade-point average.

Spence is the son of Randy and Tammie Spence of Wintersville. He was a member of Key Club, Fellowship of Christian Student Athletes and SADD. He was a member of the football and basketball teams. Along with his letters, he also received All-OVAC Academic Team, Eastern District second team, Buckeye Eight first team and All-OVAC Honorable Mention honors. Spence will participate in the Ohio Pennsylvania Football Game in June. He is a member of Crossroads Christian Church. Awards and scholarships received include the MK Associates Inc. Engineering Scholarship, Merit Scholarship, Honors Scholarship for the University of Akron, the OHSAA Scholar-Athlete Award, Indian Creek Athletic Boosters Scholarship, The "I Dare You" Leadership Award, the State Department of Education Award of Merit, the president's award of excellence, the Army Scholar-Athlete Award, the Steubenville Kiwanis Club Scholarship and the student council scholarship. Spence was a Gold Key Scholar with four academic letters and a member of National Honor Society. He holds a 4.571 GPA and plans to attend the University of Akron and major in mechanical engineering.

Greco is the daughter of Jeffrey and Melissa Greco of Bloomingdale. She was involved in SADD, student council and Key Club. She was on the cheerleading squad, a member of the band and participated in the school musical. She was a Jefferson County Fourth Street Health Center ambassador and is a member of Crossroads Christian Church. Greco received the Scholarship for Excellence, the Honors Merit Scholarship and the Choose Ohio First STEM Scholarship from the University of Akron, where she plans to attend college majoring in biology.

She received the Steubenville Rotary Club Service Above Self Scholarship, the student council scholarship, the Kristen Robinson-Johnson Scholarship, the State Department of Education Award of Merit and the president's award of excellence. She received four academic letters, was a Gold Key Scholar and a member of the National Honor Society, graduating with a 4.522 GPA.

Gibson is the daughter of Walt and Karen Gibson of Unionport. She was involved with Key Club, SADD, Student Council, National Honor Society and P.E. 4 Life. She was a member of the basketball, volleyball and tennis teams and a student athletic trainer for the football team. Gibson received four academic letters and was a Gold Key Scholar. She also received the OVAC All-Academic Award at the end of her junior year. She received the Leslie H. Cochran Scholarship from Youngstown State University, where she will be studying pre-medicine. She received the State Department of Education Award of Merit, the president's award of excellence, the principal's leadership award and the Red Cross Blood Drive Scholarship. She holds a 4.410 GPA.

Ruttencutter is the daughter of Jon and Tabitha Ruttencutter of Wintersville. She was involved in student council, Fellowship for Christian Athletes and the math club, She received the State Department of Education Award of Merit, the president's award of excellence, four varsity letters for soccer and a varsity letter in basketball. She plans to attend Franciscan University of Steubenville and major in education. She will also play for their women's soccer team. She has a GPA of 4.364.

Fithen is the daughter of Ed and Lisa Fithen of Mingo Junction. She was a Gold Key Scholar, a member of National Honor Society and received four academic letters. She was a member of Key Club, SADD, student council and the newspaper staff. Additionally, she was class officer for two years and a member of the prom committee. She was a member of the volleyball team and received honorable mention District 5 honors her junior year and District 5 second team honors her senior year. Fithen was a trainer for the football team, a member of the competition cheering squad and a basketball cheerleader. She participated in "Grease" and was a member of the homecoming court. She won the OHSAA Scholar-Athlete Award, the State Department of Education Award of Merit, the president's award of excellence, the Army Scholar-Athlete Award, Hills PTO Scholarship and the Joe Fortunato Scholarship. She will graduate with a 4.363 GPA and plans to attend OSU majoring in biological sciences.

Lash is the daughter of Michael and Donna Lash of Mingo Junction. She was a member of the marching band, squad leader and section leader of the trumpets. She participated in the concert, jazz and pep bands, receiving three superior ratings at the solo and ensemble competition.

She was a three-year member of the OVAC All-Star Marching Band, a member of Key Club, SADD and PE 4 Life. She participated in the school musical and was a member of the National Honor Society. She received four academic letters for her involvement throughout the community, an academic certificate and bronze, silver and gold keys for her academic achievements in the classroom.

She received the Morill Excellence Scholarship, the Land Grant Opportunity Scholarship and the Stadium Scholarship from OSU, where she plans to major in pharmaceutical sciences.

Lash received the Dr. Mark and Lee Lewis Band Scholarship, the First Choice America Credit Union Scholarship, Pugliese Foundation Scholarship, the Key Club Scholarship, the State Department of Education Award of Merit, the president's award of excellence, the Friends of Indian Creek Scholarship and the Kids Inc. Scholarship from Hills School. Her GPA is 4.335.

Millick is the daughter of Robert and Elizabeth Millick of Bloomingdale. She was a member of the marching, concert, pep and jazz bands and was a majorette. She attended Solo and Ensemble the past four years, receiving three superior ratings and two excellent ratings. She was awarded the Tom Donhal Scholarship for her accomplishments in band and the John Philip Sousa Award.

Millick was a member of the OVAC All-Star Band's dance and a dancer at the Place for Dance of Wintersville for 16 years. She was a Gold Key Scholar, received three academic letters and participated in the school musical. She was awarded the Clancey Family Scholarship and the Elbin Scholarship from West Liberty University, where she plans to major in music education. Her GPA is 4.307.

Beebe is the daughter of Mark and Mary Beth Beebe of Irondale. She was a member of SADD, Student Council, Key Club and PE 4 Life. She was a school representative and member of the OVAC Varsity Leadership Board and a member of National Honor Society. She participated in volleyball and played on the OVAC All-Conference team and the OVAC All-Academic team.

Beebe was named to District 5 second team and named District 5 first team her senior year. She was OVAC Class AAAA Volleyball Player of the Year and was a member of the track team. She received three Academic Letters and was a Silver Key recipient. She won the Wendy's High School Heisman Award, the State Department of Education Award of Merit, the president's award of excellence, the Indian Creek Athletic Boosters' Scholarship, the Alicia Bane Memorial Scholarship, the OVAC DeLuca Realty Volleyball Scholarship and the Clancey Family Scholarship. She will graduate with a 4.269 GPA and plans to attend Bethany College, playing volleyball and majoring in physical therapy.

Mathieu is the daughter of Bob and Debbie Mathieu of Bloomingdale. She was a member of the National Honor Society, received many academic letters for community service and academics and was a Gold Key Scholar. She participated in student council, SADD, Key Club, PE 4 Life and the school newspaper. She was a member of the volleyball, basketball and softball teams, receiving honors for OVAC basketball, OVAC All-Academic Achievement, Eastern District Softball Division II and was named in the OHSAA record book for softball achievements.

Mathieu was an athletic trainer for the football team and an active member at the Steubenville First Church of the Nazarene. SHe plans to attend Muskingum University, majoring in education and playing softball. She has been awarded the Alpha Delta Kappa Scholarship, Albert B. Teramana Memorial Scholarship, Indian Creek Athletic Boosters' Scholarship, Barkhurst Education Scholarship, Wintersville Alumni Scholarship, Friends of Indian Creek Scholarship, Archie Griffin Award, State Department of Education Award of Merit and the president's education award. She was the recipient of an academic scholarship from Muskingum University with an Appalachian Grant Scholarship from the Muskingum Scholarship Program. She graduates with a 4.241 GPA.
