WEIRTON - Golfers will be hitting the green today as the Weirton United Way holds the 30th-annual Golf Classic set to take place at Williams Country Club.

United Way Executive Director Kristin Bowman Cross said getting sponsorships for this year's tournament has been a success thus far with several new sponsors getting on board as well as new levels of sponsorships. Planning for the event began in February, she said, and the Golf Classic is the Weirton United Way's biggest charity event of the year, having raised more than $50,000 each of the last four years.

Cross said Lyle's Auto has donated a silver 2010 Mitsubishi Galant as a hole-in-one prize during the tournament. She said the local car dealership has been a great supporter of the United Way and she was happy to see the business come on board again.

"As the cost of living continues to climb and people remain out of work, we are aware of the increased needs of the community through our 15 member agencies and grateful for the generosity provided by the sponsors throughout the area," she said.

Other hole-in-one sponsors include L.S. Jewelers in Robinson Towne Center and R.E. Saxon Jeweler of Weirton.

A new twist on this year's tournament, according to Cross, is the organization's offer for a chance to walk away with a Dream Sports Package. She said the give-away has proven to be a successful part of fundraising for the event also.

Tickets for the ultimate give-away include two tickets to each of the following sports events: Pittsburgh Steelers, Pittsburgh Penguins, Pittsburgh Pirates, West Virginia Mountaineers football, University of Pittsburgh Panthers football and Ohio State Buckeyes football.

Cross said the winning ticket will be chosen at the United Way Golf Classic and presented to the winner.
