WEIRTON - More than five dozen area residents came out Sunday to show their support for the Weirton United Way with the organization's annual poker run fundraiser.
This is the eighth year the Weirton United Way has held the poker run. The Weirton United Way is the community's largest principal charity organization, supporting 15 local agencies through its fundraising efforts.
This year's sponsors include the Baymont Inn and Suites, First Choice America Community Federal Credit Union, Hancock County Savings Bank and Weirton Medical Center.
The poker run traditionally has been one of the Weirton United Way's biggest fundraisers of the year, according to organizers.
"We've had good turnouts in past years," event co-chair Jeff Davis said.
Davis explained it had been difficult finding a date for the ride this year, and other scheduled events may have kept participants from taking part this year.

"It's just nice to see folks come out and support the United Way," Davis said.
Sixty-six riders left the Baymont Inn and Suites in Weirton at noon to set off on a route taking them throughout the Tri-State Area.
This year's participants would follow a route which would take them north on state Route 2 and onto U.S. 30 for their first stop at the White Stallion near Chester.
From there, they would go into Pennsylvania and make their way to the Mousetrap Bar and Grille in Bavington, Pa. Next, they would make their way into Avella, Pa., and then into Wellsburg with a stop at Pier 12.
The event was scheduled to conclude at Get Togethers Picnic Grounds on Kings Creek Road with a picnic and entertainment for riders and any area residents interested in attending.
Information on a total raised through this year's poker run was not immediately available. The Weirton United Way will officially kick off its 2011 campaign Tuesday with a dinner at the Serbian-American Cultural Center in Weirton.
