Local Best Western now a ‘plus’ location

STEUBENVILLE - The Best Western University Inn Steubenville is now the Best Western Plus University Inn Steubenville, a nod to a $1.3 million property upgrade that earned it the new descriptor.

Those new descriptors, launched in 2010, give Best Western hotels the opportunity to earn the "plus" designation by meeting specific design and amenity guidelines.

The "plus" designation indicates an upper midscale hotel with well appointed rooms, modern amenities and an enhanced level of comfort for guests, company officials say.

"It's designed so guests will know we have additional amenities at our property," said Melissa Sedlock, director of sales and marketing at the property. "We are a full-service property - we have a restaurant on site, Damon's, which some other properties don't have. We also have meeting space."

The idea, Best Western International President and CEO David Kong said, is to help guests "choose the right hotel for their needs from among the brand's 2,200 North American properties.

Hotels that earn the "plus" descriptor typically have a three-diamond rating from AAA, and offer a little something extra to make a guest's stay even more comfortable."

The Steubenville property has 101 sleeping rooms as well as free high speed Internet access, in-room refrigerators and a complementary hot breakfast, along with Damon's Grill, an outdoor heated pool, fitness center, guest laundry, full-service business center and meeting/banquet facilities.

There's also a customer rewards program.

"We pride ourselves on our service, the assistance we give to our guests," Sedlock said.

Matthew P. Foley, general manager of the property, said the renovations began in the summer of 2010, even though at the time the benchmarks they'd have to meet to achieve the designation had not been established "so we took aim at the AAA Diamond rating, knowing that if we upgraded from two to three diamonds we would probably qualify for "plus" status as well."

Foley said most of the $1.3 million they spent on upgrades was spent on rooms: things like 32-inch flat screen televisions, refrigerators and enclosed wardrobes met basic Best Western standards, but to achieve "plus" they had to switch to 250 thread-count sheets, plush bath towels, MP3 compatible clock radios and new signage.

The hotel, operated by Prospera Hospitality, has about 70 full- and part-time employees.
