WEIRTON - Weirton Zoning Board of Appeals members approved several variances for new businesses making their way to the new Park Drive store complex during its meeting Tuesday.
Two requests came before the board concerning business signs for a Sprint store and a Sally Beauty Supply store set to open up in the retail complex located near Wal-Mart. Each store is looking to put up signs larger than permitted by the city's Unified Development Ordinance Table 8 which states that a maximum of one square foot of wall sign is permitted per one lineage foot of store frontage.
"Since the one storefront only measures 23 feet across, it is only eligible for a sign measuring 23 square feet so the Sally Beauty Supply is asking for a 25 feet variance for a total of 48 square feet of signage," said Chief Code Official Rod Rosnick, noting the sign request for Sprint is the same, only for a lesser amount.
A representative of Aladdin Signs spoke to the board saying the lettering needs to be large enough to draw people and let them know which stores were located at the complex.
The board approved the variances for both Sally Beauty Supply and Sprint.
In other business, a request came forward from Nick's Auto Sales for an expansion of an existing non-conforming sign to advertise Hertz, a car rental service the business will soon offer.
Rosnick said because the business is located in a R-1 residential area, the request needed to come before the board as a variance, which was approved.
Rue 21 will be getting some additional signage as well so the business can feature three wall signs. Rosnick said the business is not limited by the amount of square footage, but the number of signs permitted. He said there is a maximum of one wall sign per street frontage so the business is requesting two additional, also approved unanimously.
