Auxiliary to host annual picnic

WEIRTON - The Tri-State Marine Corps Club Auxiliary held its monthly meeting May 14 at the Serbian American Cultural Center on Colliers Way with President Joan Spano calling the meeting to order and presiding over the business session.

Chaplain Mary Ann Smith read "Happy the Home When God is There For Mother's Day" and offered the invocation and special prayers for Helen Call, Rita Robinson, Robert Davidson, Cari Anderson, Shirley Brecht, Dan and Carol Lyons, the Sandy Lous family and the Phyllis Demasis family.

Second Vice President Elizabeth Ship led the Pledge of Allegiance; Vice President Darlene Kemp called roll; and Recording Secretary Carol Lyons read the April minutes, which were approved as read. Lyons also read a thank you from Boatsie's Boxes for the volunteers for the "Beat the Heat" kick-off party from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. June 24 in Wheeling, and the "Honor Our Military Heroes" Boatsie's Boxes-Cabela event from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m June 30 at the Wheeling Cabela's. Joan and Marcy Spano, Shirley Brecht, George and Maxine Ragan and Don and Mary Ann Smith will be volunteering.

Lyons also read thank-you cards from Shirley Brecht and the Brecht family and from the Tri-State Medical Group. The group thanked Linda Elliott for making more than 100 Christmas cards to be sent to active duty troops. Joan Spano sent Marge Porchiran a thank-you for a red, white and blue lap throw.

Maxine Ragan gave the treasurer's report, and Mary Ann Elliott gave the sunshine report. She sent get-well cards to William Snyder, Bill Ship, Berna Bee, John Harline, Maxine Ragan, Helen Call and Ruth Zirkle. Sympathy cards were sent to Shirley Brecht and Robert Cline. The club sent a congratulations to Don and Mary Ann Smith on the birth of their grandchild.

Shirley Brecht gave a report on the Christmas party, and Leroy Bee will place the Tri-State Marine Corps Club Auxiliary wreath at the Weirton Heights Memorial. May birthday wishes were extended to Carol Lyons, Tina Spano and Maxine Ragan, with the group singing "Happy Birthday" and enjoying cake.

Joan Spano sent six birthday cards to Barboursville Veterans Home for May.

The auxiliary presented Duke Horstemeyer with a pewter Iwo Jima statue and Marine suncatcher.

The club and auxiliary will hold the annual family picnic at noon June 15 at Get Together's Picnic Grounds on Kings Creek Road. All attending are asked to bring a covered dish and an item for the farmers table.

The auxiliary is sponsoring a bakeless bake sale as its June fundraiser and donations can be sent to Joan Spano at 3640 Orchard St., Weirton, WV 26062. All proceeds benefit the club.

The next meeting is June 11, and Mary Ann Smith will provide refreshments.
