WEIRTON - As the Weirton Redevelopment Authority continues to look for ways to bring development to the north end of the city and overall, members took another look at possible uses of its Community Development Block Grant funds.
Authority Chairman Mark Zatezalo asked CDBG Administrator Beth Gaughan to take a look at what types of projects could be eligible for the remaining $22,000 left to the group. He said he wanted to get a clear idea as to what can be done with the money.
Gaughan said it is hard to narrow down what the funds can be used for and said the main thing is to be able to accomplish a Housing and Urban Development national objective and the use of the project afterward. She said the easiest types of projects include the removal of slum and blight or job creation.
"It's much easier for me to determine what the money can be used for if you put together a project and present it to me," she said. "HUD will even do what they can to help as well."
Gaughan assured the Redevelopment Authority the funds would be able to be used until the next fiscal year.
Zatezalo said they wanted to be sure that as the north end of the city gets developed, money can be used to do studies or acquire property. He said there is a public hearing scheduled for July 9 to discuss the Northern District Development Plan recently approved by the Weirton Planning Commission.
