WEIRTON - Area residents looking for something to do during the summer can head to Marland Heights Park for some food, fun and games.
The Marland Heights Park will be hosting Ribfest Tuesdays and Sausagefest Thursdays at the park from 2 to 8 p.m. weekly, weather permitting, near the main picnic shelters.
Terry Weigel, executive director for the Weirton Board of Parks and Recreation, said there has been good participation so far as the activities continue to be spread by word of mouth. He said he hears people say there is nothing to do and nowhere to go, so the Park Board has helped set up the activities in hopes of getting people out and about.
Those who will be heading out for the activities can place an order ahead of time by calling the Barbeque Hotline at 304-723-8951 and place the order before the food runs out. They then can go to the park to pickup the food, or bring a basket full of goodies and spend and evening picnicing at the park.
"This is just one way we thought to encourage more use of the park while providing fun activities and events for the local kids who are looking for something to do," he said.
Weigel said in addition to all the food for sale, there will be fruit smoothies, ice cream, a cup of fruit and plenty of cold beverages. He said there is also plenty of games available, including cornhole, bocce, horseshoes, basketball and sand volleyball, along with a surprise event or two.
The games and activities are free. Food items on the menu are a nominal fee. Organizers suggest calling in advance on the day of the themed picnic to order main course items since they will only be prepared and available while supplies last.
