KAUFMANN, James W. "Popie," 95, of Steubenville, died Tuesday June 19, 2012, at Acuity Hospital.
He was born July 18, 1916, in Steubenville. He is the son of the late Fred and Nellie Burns Kaufmann, James is also preceded in death by his wife Mary Catherine Duffy Kaufmann whom he was married to for 50 years and his brother, Fred Kaufmann.
James was retired from the United States Postal Service as Superintendent of Mail, with 37 years of service and then was retired from the former First National Bank, Wintersville as the branch manager.

James served with distinction during World War II as a paratrooper in 507th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 82nd Airborne Division. After his infantry and airborne training, he jumped into Normandy on D-Day, 1944, and fought in several other battles. During the events of D-Day, he was captured by the Germans, but he managed to escape and rejoin his unit to continue the fight against the enemy. He rose to the rank of sergeant. At the end of the war, he had earned and was awarded four Bronze Star citations, the Order of the Purple Heart and the Prisoner of War Medal.
Surviving are his son, Dr. Richard (Karen) Kaufmann of Bridgeport, WV and his daughter, Anita Lyn (Craig) Petrella of Steubenville; six grandchildren, Jay W., Billy (Nikki) and Michael Petrella and Matthew, Evan and Brian Kaufmann.
James was a member of First Westminster Presbyterian Church and was a 75-year member of the F&AM lodge #45, VFW and a life member of the DAV.
Calling hours are Friday 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. at the Mosti Funeral Home, Sunset Chapel, 4435 Sunset Blvd. Steubenville and on Saturday at Westminster Presbyterian Church, 235 N. Fourth St., 10 until the time of services at 11 a.m., Rev. Jason Elliott will officiate. Entombment in Mt. Calvary Cemetery. There will be a Masonic service 6:30 p.m. Friday.
Military honors will be conducted by the Ohio Valley Memorial Squad.
