Those who complain that there is nothing do in our area probably have not taken a good look at the schedule of events that are planned in the next week.
For example, at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, the Jazz Ambassadors of the U.S. Army Field Band will bring their unique sound to the Harv at Mountaineer Casino, Racetrack and Resort. The free event - the Freedom Concert, A Salute to Veterans - is sponsored by the Herald-Star, The Weirton Daily Times, Mountaineer, the (Lisbon) Morning Journal and the (East Liverpool) Review. Tickets are still available and can be obtained at the newspaper office.
Also Thursday, a Tribute to John Denver will be featured at the Louis and Sandra Berkman Amphitheater as the weekly concert series continues. And on Friday, Radio Tokyo will be the featured performer as the Friday's at Five concert series continues at the Weirton Event Center.
The 17-annual edition of Thunder in the Ville will be held Friday and Saturday at the Treasure Island Market Place in Wintersville. The event will feature music, a car show and great food, and will conclude with the annual fireworks show at 10 p.m. Saturday.
The weekend will end in a big way next Sunday when the Jefferson County Chamber of Commerce and WTOV-TV present the second-annual Stars and Stripes Festival and Concert in and around Steubenville's Hollywood City Center. Activities will begin at noon at the Harding practice facility and will include a cruise-in, food and nonfood vendors, karaoke and a family fun zone sponsored by the Fort Steuben Mall. A beer garden and local food vendor will be set up in the Kroger parking lot.
Things will really heat up in the evening, when the concert headlined by the Clarks is held in Harding Stadium. Mount Pleasant's Joe Zelek is scheduled to be the opening act at 7 p.m., with the Clarks taking the stage at 8:15 p.m. Tickets for the show are still available, and are very affordable.
General admission bleacher tickets cost $15, while field seating tickets cost $20 if purchased in advance. The grand finale of the day will come at 9:45 p.m. when Steubenville's annual fireworks display is presented above Hollywood City Center. The city, Hollywood City Center and TEAM Automotive are again joining to present the fireworks.
