FINANCE MEETING — During the Finance Committee meeting on Thursday, city officials discussed anticipated purchasing contracts for the Public Works Department that will bring a new sanitation truck to the fleet along with a snow plow truck with equipment already mounted. Public Works Director John Brown said his department just received the sanitation truck purchased out of last year's budget and wants to move forward on getting the contract for the new purchase ready since it takes approximately six to eight months to receive the truck.
He said he spoke with several contractors who informed him that once council approves the purchase, the sanitation truck - which costs approximately $163,807 - could be in Weirton as early as December.
Brown said the new truck that arrived several weeks ago was purchased on a state contract but the new truck will bypass the state purchasing program.
In addition to a new sanitation truck, a resolution to purchase a 2012 Ford F550 4x4 regular cab truck, priced at $63,409, was also approved for recommendation by the Finance Committee. Brown said the truck was a snow plow that has the snow plow mounted to the front.
"We've got a spreader at Public Works right now that we are going to put on the back of it," he said. "That work, I believe, can be done in house which will save a lot of money."
Ward 3 Councilman Fred Marsh requested the wording in the resolution set to go before council be modified to list the stainless steel bed and mounted equipment.
He said he would like to make sure there is a clear understanding of what is included with the purchase.
City council will meet on Monday at 7:30 p.m. on the second floor of the Weirton Municipal Building for the regular monthly meeting.
