WEIRTON - Weirton police are investigating an apparent murder-suicide after a couple was found dead Monday.

Dispatchers at Hancock County and Weirton Area Ambulance and Rescue Squad involved with the call said the incident was reported just before 9 p.m. at 260 Seneca St., the home of Luke and Toni Shields.

WAARS officials said the call came in from a third party who gave the address without much detail of the incident and was dispatched as "an unknown man down" and crews remained on scene until approximately 1:30 a.m.

Weirton Police Chief Bruce Marshall said Shields, a male in his mid-30s, and his wife had a history of domestic violence reported at the residence. Upon conducting the initial investigation, Marshall said it was clear that it was a case of murder-suicide.

"He killed her and then killed himself," said Marshall this morning.

Marshall said police spent the evening gathering evidence at the scene which indicated that the murder and suicide were committed with a firearm. While no other details were released at the time of this report, he said the incident is still under investigation.
