WEIRTON - The Weirton Fire Department "Hoses" defeated the Weirton Medical Center Foundation "Healers" in a charity basketball game on Thursday.

The public was invited to the Weirton Madonna High School gymnasium to view the game for a contribution of $5 for charity. The proceeds, which were not immediately available, will be separated and shared between the Weirton Medical Center Foundation and the Muscular Dystrophy Association.

The "Hoses" led the first period over the "Healers" at 16 to 10 and both teams doubled that score during the second period with the fire department in the lead at 32 to 20. During the third period, Weirton Medical Center closed the gap still trailing the Weirton Fire Department 45 to 39.

Weirton Medical Center came back strong but still remained behind the fire department throughout the fourth period. In a last attempt to even the score with just seconds to go, Richard Jackson of the Healers completed a half-court shot which brought the final score to 65 to 62 with the Weirton Fire Department coming out on top.

"It was a good game and we hope to be able to set up more games throughout the year," said Kevin Brown, communications director for Weirton Medical Center.
