Time for changes in boxing

July 22, 2012
Weirton Daily Times

To the Editor,

Arizona Sen. John McCain reintroduced his Professional Boxing Amendments Act on June 18 in the wake of Cathedral City's Timothy Bradley's upset victory over Manny Pacquiao.

Having grown up in the fight racket here in the Ohio Valley for the past 40 years, I've been aware of McCain's love for boxing, a passion I share with him. And, anyone who has been frustrated with the alphabet soup sanctioning bodies and the promotion companies who line their pockets at the expense of the interests of the boxers and fans, this is a needed bill. The bill also aims to protect the integrity of the sport.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., who has called for an investigation into the fight, also supports the bill. The proposed legislation goes to the Senate Commerce, Science and Transportation Committee headed by Sen. John D. Rockefeller IV, D-W.Va. It is my understanding that if the bill is to be advanced, that decision is up to the chair of the committee.

This, of course, is the Senate version of the House side of the bill, that rests with Energy and Commerce Chair Fred Upton, R-Mich. (whose niece would put any ring girl to shame, as she graces the cover of Sports Ilustrated's 2012 swim suit issue) after being introduced by U.S. Rep. Peter King, R-N.Y. U.S. Rep. David McKinley, R-Wheeling, sits on the committee and has a chance to really do something that will benefit Wheeling and the state of West Virginia., and the poor people of America who don gloves in this country's arenas. It has been said that boxing is performed by the underclass to entertain the working class.

The reason we do not have a federal boxing commission is because Attorney General Robert F. Kennedy gave thumbs down 50 years ago. So, we need look no farther than West Virginia's own back yard if this bill dies in committee. Keep in punching.
