I’m just not into the Olympics

August 12, 2012
Weirton Daily Times

As the 2012 Olympic games come to an end, I must confess - I watched very little. Pretty much, I just saw the updates and spoilers and some news coverage, along with everything that "pops up" when you log onto Yahoo!

I know Michael Phelps is the most decorated Olympian ever, even though he didn't even make the podium in his first race out of the gate this year. He personally has 22 medals, 18 of which are gold. He said he is hanging up his swimming trunks. He has accomplished all his goals. Good for him. I bet Mama Phelps is proud, as is most of America.

Other big American names I have heard (and remember) come out of this Olympics are: Gabby Douglas, who took gold in women's gymnastics; Ryan Lochte, who raced against Phelps and was probably his biggest competitor; Misty Mae-Traynor and Carrie Walsh, who competed in beach volleyball; and, LeBron James and Kobe Bryant, who, of course, played for the men's basketball team. Sadly, I think that might be it.

Like I said, I didn't watch.

Does that make me un-American?

And since when is badminton a sport? Apparently it is and not only that, but people are actually awarded medals for being good at it.

I saw some on the coverage of water polo while at work (that's the station we keep on in the newsroom to keep "informed"), and I still don't understand anything about it.

One reporter wanted to know where the horses were.

I also believe that there must be something in the water in Australia.

Two of their runners are the fastest people I have ever seen in my life. The man (I think I heard) is the fastest man alive. I believe it. I saw Sally Pearson, their female runner, do the hurdles one day. All I can say is "wow." Talk about fast.

Someone in the newsroom the other day asked who is the sexiest male summer Olympian. Sorry, I don't have a vote in this category. My vote will always belong to Apolo Ohno be it summer or winter.

All I can say is, "NBC, please bring my pre-empted soap back."
