New home of the Red Riders

August 25, 2012
Weirton Daily Times
Phil Carey, son of Jimmy Carey, and members of the Carey family were on hand to unveil the sign for the new Jimmy Carey Stadium, the new home of the Red Riders on campus at Weir High School, Friday in the home opener against Indian Creek. There was also a moment of silence for Bob Rossell, which was followed by the dedication of the stadium sign and press box. The stadium was built at a cost of $5,010,000, which was part of the $56 million in Hancock County school renovation projects. “Without the help of the people and the sponsors we would not have been able to pull this off,” said Weir High principal Dan Enich. “Since 1963, when Weir High School was built, there has never been a football game on our campus. Now all our teams can play right here — the varsity and reserve football teams, the middle school, our soccer teams, both boys and girls and our boys and girls track teams.” The previous Jimmy Carey Stadium in downtown Weirton was home to the Red Riders for 76 years. -- Mike Mathison
