WHEELING - Ohio Valley Medical Center recently was awarded the American College of Radiology designation as a Breast-Imaging Center of Excellence, making it the only breast imaging center in the Ohio Valley and only the third in the state to receive the national designation.

By awarding facilities the status of BICOE, the ACR recognizes breast-imaging centers that have earned accreditation in the College's entire voluntary, breast imaging accreditation programs in addition to the Mammography Accreditation Program. Nationally, Center for Excellence status has been granted to only 919 other facilities across the country.

"It's exciting to be the first facility in our area to be designated as a Center of Excellence, but more than that, it is rewarding to know that we are exceeding industry standards and expectations to do what is right for patients in our community," said Vicki Novick, director of radiology and imaging services at OVMC and East Ohio Regional Hospital. "We are extremely proud of our dedicated physicians and staff who have worked so hard to help us achieve this important designation and their efforts to providing each of our patients with high quality and compassionate care."

The breast imaging services at OVMC are fully accredited in mammography, stereotactic breast biopsy, breast ultrasound and ultrasound-guided breast biopsy. Peer-review evaluations, conducted in each breast imaging modality by board-certified physicians and medical physicists who are experts in the field, have determined the facility has achieved high practice standards in image quality, personnel qualifications, facility equipment, quality control procedures and quality assurance programs. Ohio Valley Medical Center was the area's first hospital to perform digital mammography screenings and stereotactic breast biopsy procedures.

"Being named a Breast Imaging Center of Excellence by the ACR assures patients that we are a premier provider of comprehensive breast imaging services," she said, adding the designation "reflects our dedication to providing patients with the best possible care."

With the accreditation comes enhanced personnel training and increased research abilities, allowing physicians, radiologists and technicians to have access to in-depth training with expertise in breast imaging. Benefits include:

Enhanced staff training and education in the most recent breast imaging developments with a guarantee that physicians are board-certified and have particular expertise in breast imaging.

Access to the National Mammography Database, which allows for peer review and the sharing of comparative information on benchmarking data such as cancer detection rates and recall rates.

New breast imaging technologies and added specialization allowing all patients to receive state-of-the-art care

The ACR is a national professional organization serving more than 24,000 diagnostic/interventional radiologists, radiation oncologists, nuclear medicine physicians and medical physicists with programs focusing on the practice of medical imaging and radiation oncology and the delivery of comprehensive health care services.

Ohio Valley Medical Center located in Wheeling and East Ohio Regional Hospital located in Martins Ferry together have 340 beds and more than 1,600 employees on both sides of the Ohio River.
