The communities of the Northern Panhandle are filled with patriotic residents who celebrate their nation and do whatever they can to recognize the work of the men and women who have dedicated their lives to preserve our freedoms.
Locally, there are many projects in the works to recognize our military veterans, and a new monument in Follansbee is getting ready for its official unveiling on Thursday.
The monument - to be dedicated in honor of all veterans and located inside Follansbee Municipal Park - is special for another reason; it was a true community project.
It was built through the efforts of the 20th Century Woman's Club and the Follansbee Chamber of Commerce, with support from several area businesses.
It was constructed by Professional Lawn and Landscape of Follansbee, which also donated wood chips and flowers, with a sign donated by Express Signs and a stone marker donated by Eric Fithyan, the owner of Chambers and James Funeral Homes.
We urge area residents to attend the dedication at 5:30 p.m. Thursday at the park. In particular, we hope our local veterans will consider attending.
This monument is for you, and will make sure no one ever forgets your sacrifice.
