CARMAN, William C., 85, died Thursday morning at his home after a long illness.
He was born in Unionport, Ohio, on September 11, 1926, the son of the late Eugene and Carrie Hosterman Carman.
William graduated from Jewett High School, class of 1944, after which he was inducted into the U.S. Army on December 5, 1944 in Cleveland, Ohio. He served in the Asiatic Pacific theater during World War II, until discharge on November 6, 1946. He received the Victory Medal, Army of Occupation Medal Japan, and the Asiatic Pacific Theater Ribbon.
Bill retired from Weirton Steel in 1980 after over 32 years of service. He was a member of the Pine Valley Sportsman's Club, American Legion #682 in Hopedale, Cadiz Eagles and the Unionport Christian Church.
In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by an infant son and brothers Earl, George and Harry Carman.
William is survived by his wife, Lola Tipton Carman of Hopedale, whom he married on May 15, 1948; two daughters, Mary (Gene) Liggett of Hopedale and Leona Smith of Hopedale; a son, Willie (Judy) Carman of Hopedale; a brother, Walter (Billie) Carman of Hopedale; two sisters, Betty Klinesmith of Stow, Ohio, and Shirley (Bernard) Kuryn of Hopedale; six grandchildren, Kristyn Wooten, Ryan Carman, Alex "Wooger" Smith, Ben Smith, Heather Soos and Rae Anne Sowers; five great-grandchildren; a sister-in-law, Mary Carmen of Bloomingdale; his good friend Alex Smith of Hopedale; and many nieces, nephews, brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law and hundreds of friends.
Friends may call at the Blackburn Funeral Home, 324 High St., Hopedale, on Saturday, September 1, 2012 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m., with services there on Sunday at 2 p.m. with Pastor Dean Blythe officiating. Burial will follow at Unionport Cemetery. The Hopedale American Legion will provide military honors.
