To the Editor,
I would like to take the opportunity to publicly acknowledge Mayor George Kondik, City Manager Valerie Means and the Weirton City Council for their good work in not only ensuring Weirton's fiscal solvency but delivering a budget surplus of $250,000 to city taxpayers.
Municipalities nationwide are facing severe budgetary shortfalls with some reaching the point of bankruptcy. Despite the economic challenges of a declining local economy, Weirton, through the current administration and Council, has maintained a course of steady fiscal leadership that should not be taken for granted.
I have personally witnessed the positive, collaborative approach they bring to addressing resident concerns as well as working to attract new jobs. Too often in past years, Weirton was faced with a divided city government and city administrations who looked to solve structural fiscal problems by increasing taxes on business and residents.
Our community has never hesitated to hold prior Mayors, city administrations and Council accountable for poor performance; so it is equally important we publicly recognize the cooperation and achievement of Mayor Kondik, his administration and the current City Council. Weirton is better because of your leadership.
