Starkdale to host Abigail’s Angels Charity Walk

September 1, 2012
Weirton Daily Times

"It will certainly be a sight as local angels tighten up their laces and walk around town - all for a great cause," said Cingdy Sagrilla, one of the organizers of the upcoming Abigail's Angels Charity Walk set for Sept. 22 at Indian Creek High School.

The 3-mile walk is being held to raise money and awareness for a rare eye condition called Leber's Congenital Amaurosis. The walk honors 8-year-old Abigail Kinney and her fight for sight, Sagrilla said.

The walk starts at 10 a.m. at the high school stadium and winds through Wintersville, ending back at the stadium with "Finish Line Festivities," including inflatables, quality basket drawings, food, facing-painting and more, Sagrilla said.

"We have high aspirations toward the success of this year's event," said Jane Gambos, church elder and one of the organizers. "We invite the community to get involved. Something as simple as a walk can easily build awareness and lead to a tremendous event."

The walk is open to the public with individuals invited to participate "just come for the fun."

Interested individuals can register for the walk and the event festivities by visiting www.abigails-angels.com or calling the Starkdale Presbyterian Church office at (740) 264-5309. The registration fee prior to the event is $20 for an adult and $10 for a child, which includes race, T-shirt and lunch. Non-walkers can come for lunch and finish-line festivities for $5 per person.

Leber's Congenital Amaurosis is a disease that causes the eye's retina to slowly die. The gene RDH12 is the culprit, but there is hope, event organizers said. Research is under way for the development of a gene therapy treatment that will sustain or restore vision for many like Abigail. Abigail's Angels support the official 5013C nonprofit, "The RDH12 Fund for Sight," and all donations are tax-deductible. All monies are used to fund RDH12 research.
