WINTERSVILLE, Ohio - The Jefferson County Chapter of the Ohio Genealogical Society will present "They Came in Ships" at 6:30 p.m. Monday at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints on Powells Lane.
Chapter President Flora L. VerStraten Merrin will discuss the process of applying for naturalization when immigrants reached the states. She also will review the major immigration ports, such as Ellis Island, and what can be learned from passenger arrival lists.
There will be a discussion on the steps immigrants had to follow when applying for Declaration of Intention and the Application of Citizenship.
Those attending also will learn various ways to research their ancestors' paths to becoming United States citizens. VerStraten Merrin will talk about the organizations, archives and libraries that can assist in locating records.
There will be a show-and-tell period during which the original records, ledgers and documents of immigration into Jefferson County will be viewed. All those attending will receive a fact sheet handout and should be prepared to take notes.
All meetings of the Jefferson County Genealogical Society are free to the public. Refreshments will be served.
