Delay likely in sale of stadium

September 18, 2012
From staff reports , Weirton Daily Times

NEWELL - The impending sale of Newell Memorial Stadium likely will be postponed to give the Hancock County school board more time to work out the legal details of the auction.

The sale had been scheduled for 10 a.m. Oct. 5, but board President Jerry Durante said Monday that he can't "see any way we can make that date."

Last week, the board voted 3-2 against Superintendent Suzan Smith's proposal to sell the stadium at a public auction to the highest bidder. Board members who voted "no" said they did so over a technicality - the requirement that the winning bidder pay 10 percent of the purchase price up front and the balance by Oct. 12.

Board members said requiring a lump-sum payment unnecessarily narrowed the field of potential buyers.

Smith said the board would have to vote on a new recommendation no later than Monday because the legal notice for the auction has to run in newspapers two weeks before the sale. No special meeting was scheduled, however, and Durante said he doesn't think the matter will come up for a vote at the next regularly scheduled meeting, which is Sept. 24.

The stadium, declared surplus property by the board in June, is no longer needed by the school district because of the new Oak Glen Multi-Sports Complex adjacent to the high school.
