Area United Ways need your help

September 25, 2012
Weirton Daily Times

United Ways throughout our area have launched their campaigns.

All of our local United Way organizations provide an important service to our area by providing funding and resources to programs and agencies that might not be able to function otherwise.

In a time when more of us are having to watch our money more closely, the work of the men and women serving the United Way becomes even more important, as does reaching their fundraising goals. There are many ways area residents can show support for their United Ways, in addition to making a simple donation.

The United Way of Jefferson County, for instance is well on the way to meeting its campaign goal of $440,000. A campaign report luncheon has been scheduled for noon Thursday at the YWCA in Steubenville. In addition to that event, the always-popular Taste of Jefferson County is set for Oct. 9 at St. Florian Hall in Wintersville, and the annual Day of Caring will be held on Oct. 26.

A loyal and capable corps of local volunteers, under the guidance of campaign chair Anthony Mougianis, already has been canvassing our area, looking for support from area residents and businesses.

The Weirton United Way, meanwhile, decided against holding its annual dinner and instead has scheduled several activities for this week, including a luncheon for the campaign team today and the annual school walk-a-thon on Friday. This years' campaign is being chaired by John Greco.

The United Way of the Upper Ohio, which serves agencies in Brooke County, has set a campaign goal of $777,777, and has many events and activities planned for the coming months.

Our area United Ways serve many agencies that help make the lives of others better. Some provide food to the hungry, some shelter to the homeless. Some help individuals and families in distress, while others provide shelter from violence.

A donation as small as $1 each week can help make a tremendous difference in the lives of your friends and neighbors.

We ask that you make it a point to support the area United Ways, and help to make our area a better place to live and work.
