STEUBENVILLE - Bishop Jeffrey M. Monforton of the Catholic Diocese of Steubenville will begin the official mourning for the late retired Bishop Albert H. Ottenweller Thursday afternoon at the Holy Name Cathedral.
Diocesan Communications Director Pat DeFrancis announced Tuesday afternoon the public is invited to join Monforton at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at the cathedral "for the liturgical reception of the body."
The 96-year-old Ottenweller died Sunday in Toledo following a brief illness.
According to DeFrancis, Ottenweller's body will lie in state until the time of vespers at 7 p.m. Thursday.
"The cathedral will remain open to the public until 8:30 p.m. Thursday. The cathedral will reopen to the public at 9 a.m. Friday, and Bishop Ottenweller's body will lie in state until the funeral Mass at 11 a.m.," said DeFrancis.
Monforton will be the celebrant at Ottenweller's funeral Mass.
Ottenweller will be buried at 11 a.m. Saturday in St. Mary's Cemetery in Leipsic, Ohio.
Ottenweller was named the second bishop of the Steubenville Diocese and installed as the spiritual leader of the 40,000 Eastern Ohio Catholics on Nov. 22, 1977.
He retired as the bishop of the Steubenville Diocese on April 2, 1992.
According to the Coyle Funeral Home of Toledo, "It is Bishop's desire that any contributions be given in his memory to the continuation of the Servant Leadership, 1618 Sylvania Ave., Toledo, OH 43612."
